I can understand why The Doctor keeps bringing his companions back home. Since he has no family left, and he didn't spend much time with them, he's realised how important family is.

Today’s Guardian features an utterly bizarre interview with Freema Agyeman.

Of the sixteen questions in the article six focus on her colour or tha nationalities of her parents and include the mind numbingly insulting:

Maybe the printers mistakenly printed an interview from the BNP by accident?

Apparently the interviewer is also black which just makes things odder IMO.

I found this quite puzzling.

Are you doing her as a stereotypically “feisty black woman”?

Stereotypically feisty how? It’s a coveted lead female role. There are no stipulations. The BBC has chosen to cast it black. I’m proud to be an actor, I’m proud to be black, but in this case the two are not synonymous.
Why is the interviewer saying this? She's putting Freema in an incredibly difficult position. What relevance does this have? The interview could have been phrased completely differently. Also:

I read that Billie was really jealous when she saw a picture of you on the cover of the Doctor Who magazine - that she wanted to scratch your eyes out.

It’s funny how things translate. I could see that it wouldn’t have been meant with venom, but the Doctor Who family is such a unique and exclusive and wonderful environment to be in that you can appreciate that once you’re out of it must feel different.
That is completely vindictive to Billie and it probably doesn’t make Freema feel any better someone telling you that some one wants to "scratch your eyes out", even if that isn’t what someone said. Personally if it had been me I would've walked out of the interview.

I'm just appalled, sounds like the interviewer had an agenda... had he been white im sure some people would be throwing around the *R* word

Having read the on-line article, it does seem rather antagonistic.

But maybe Hannah Pool was just trying to get a different take on the run-of-the-mill interviews. And goofed badly.

And if you look at it from a different perspective, Freema being the first black person (as far as I can remember) to be a Dr Who assistant is an incredibly big deal.

The even bigger deal is that I had to work hard to think of reasons why it is an incredibly big deal.

To me she's another assistant. Who isn't Billie Piper. So I'm happy.

But she's not, Noel Clarke was.

Personally I tend to think of Mickey as a supporting character, rather than an assistant as such. He only made a couple of trips in the Tardis after all. And he was only involved with The Doctor because of Rose. Not because he wanted to travel with the Doctor.

Similarly I don't class Adam as an assistant. Or Jackie Tyler.

Jack Harkness is sort of on the cusp between assistant and supporting character, as he did travel with The Doctor for several stories.

I'd decide on the side of Captain Jack = Assistant. But probably because of familiarity through Torchwood.

This does beg the question - is there an official definition of who you class as a Doctor Who assistant or not? And if so, what is it?

Yes that is a shame.

Just doing a quick Google, it appears Series 3 of Doctor Who is on in July.

So compared to how long the UK had to wait for American imports not so long ago, a few months isn't so bad...

Besides, it's probably Australia's punishment for winning The Ashes so often...

... well blackmail is probably the only way the England cricket team will get them back any time soon...

To be honest, I wasn't a great fan of Rose, although I did warm to her over the course of 2 series.

So Martha is like a breath of fresh air as far as I'm concerned.
